Alain Resnais,
or the role of imagination

Product Number: HEP 1044 Collector's Edition

by James Monaco

The author of How To Read a Film and The New Wave, here turns to the remarkable work of Alain Resnais, whose films include Last Year at Marienbad, Muriel, and Hiroshima, mon amour. Monaco examines how Resnais's relationships with novelists Alain Robbe-Grillet and Marguerite Duras influenced his fascination with narrative technique, and explains how different a picture of Resnais's work we would have if some of his unrealized projects—collaborations with Richard Seaver and Stan Lee—had come to fruition. Most important, Monaco brings us closer to Resnais himself through numerous interviews and wide-ranging discussions with the director.

The book includes a set of previously unpublished photographs taken by the director himself and more than 100 frame enlargements from the films.

Published in 1979, this is the original cloth first edition collector's item, signed by the author. Note: although each copy is in pristine condition, there may be some slight wear to the dust jacket due to the age.
